Why we miss the "iPhone 6" era of updates

If you look at the recent headlines for Android 17 and iOS 27, the central theme is singular: Gemini Intelligence and Siri AI. It has reached a point where if a device doesn't have an "AI" badge slapped on the box, companies are terrified to even release it. We’ve been conditioned to believe that if a phone isn't actively predicting our next thought or generating a summary of our emails, it’s obsolete.

Do you remember the excitement of the iPhone 6?

There was a genuine buzz. The screen was bigger, the camera was significantly sharper, the battery life saw a real-world jump, and the design felt like a leap forward. It wasn't about "software magic"—it was about hardware that fundamentally changed how you interacted with the world.

Today, we are in the era of "AI or Bust."

The "Feature" vs. The "Gimmick" AI is undeniably powerful, but it’s becoming the only story. We are seeing a shift where companies are prioritizing "AI integration" over the fundamental pillars that actually made us fall in love with smartphones in the first place:

  • Physical Reliability: The speed of the touch interface.
  • Hardware Utility: The quality of the lens, the brightness of the screen, and the durability of the build.
  • Simplicity: Does it just work, or does it constantly try to interpret what I’m doing?

Are we losing the plot? Sometimes, the best "update" is a device that stays out of your way. When I look at the GlomeSpace ecosystem, we focus on moving packages from A to B as efficiently as possible. We don’t need an AI to rewrite the address—we just need the logistics to be perfect.

I’m starting to wonder if the mass market feels the same way about their pockets.

The Question for You: When you go to buy your next phone, what is the deciding factor? Is it the "AI capabilities" and the LLM integration? Or are you looking for the same things we looked for in 2014—battery life, a better camera, and a phone that doesn’t lag?

Are we genuinely excited about AI, or are we just being told that we should be?

I’d love to hear your take. Reply to this email and let me know: Does your next phone need to be an "AI device," or just a better phone?

Keep journeying,

Best Regards,

We’ve all heard the advice: “Just put your money in the S&P 500, wait 40 years, and you’ll be a millionaire.” It’s the standard blueprint for financial freedom. But let’s be honest—it’s a strategy for people who want to be wealthy in their 70s. If you are a founder, a creator, or someone hungry to build your future now, waiting decades for compound interest to do the heavy lifting isn't just slow; it’s insufficient. This week, I broke down a different way to think about "investing" on my...

Have you ever wondered why you get paid what you get paid? We’re taught that the market is a rational, magical force. It calculates your "value," determines your "worth," and spits out a salary. It’s called the Theory of Marginal Productivity. It sounds scientific, doesn’t it? It suggests that if you’re a developer, a designer, or a founder, you are paid exactly what you produce—no more, no less. It implies the system is fair. But what if I told you that this "theory" wasn't discovered in...

Today is a big day in the startup world. It’s June 5th—the day Y Combinator notifies the thousands of founders who applied to their Summer 2026 batch. I’ve been there. I’ve applied before, I’ve felt the sting of rejection, and I’ve applied again. I know the specific kind of anxiety that comes with waiting for an email that feels like it’s going to determine the entire future of your company. But as I sit here today, I want to share a hard-won truth: The candle must keep on burning, no matter...
